Every 10 Minutes an Australian Small Business is Attacked

Australian Small Business is Attacked
According to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), one out of every 10 minutes an Australian small business is attacked by a cyber threat. Does your business represent an SMB? If so, it is a target for a cyber security threat. The trends of increasing cyber attacks frequency and sophistication show no signs of slowing down.

  • Sole Trader – one employee
  • Micro-business – two to four employees
  • Small Business – five to 19 employees
  • Medium-sized Business – 20 to 199 employees

Earlier this year, Australia was labelled the sixth most targeted country in the world for cyber threats. If 2020 is anything to go by, simple security and response plans won’t be enough to protect your business moving forward. The Federal Government’s recommendations and the lessons learned from the range of cyber incidents in 2020 provide a prompt for all organisations to reassess their cyber resilience and incident readiness.

As an SMB owner, you wear many hats and you are an expert in your field. Now is the time to hire a business cyber expect to help you prevent, detect, contain and respond to all potential cyber security attacks to your business. It must now be a core business competency which is why we offer high level cyber security strategy, penetration testing to detect any weaknesses in your defense, employee training to help contain the potential for attacks and managed security services to respond to any alerts.

There is more at risk than data
These attacks may impact your organisation’s data, but they can also impact your staff, operations, customers and suppliers. Research by Comparethemarket.com.au found 44% of employees have put their company at risk of a cyber attack. Medium-sized businesses compromised their employer the most, with more than half admitting to potentially opening up their systems to an attack or data breach.

Who could be a cyber threat?
Cyber criminals come in all shapes and sizes. They may be an individual or a group of people. Threats may come from:

  • criminals – out for money or information, to illegally access your hardware and data, or to disrupt your business
  • clients you do business with – to compromise your information
  • business competitors – looking to gain an advantage over your business
  • current or former employees – who accidentally or intentionally compromise your information

How can cyberattacks happen?
Cybercriminals look for information and ways to access the data on your business, employees and customers.

  • theft or unauthorised access of hardware, computers and mobile devices
  • infecting computers with malware (such as viruses, ransomware, and spyware)
  • attacking your technology or website
  • attacking third party systems
  • spamming you with emails containing malware
  • gaining access to your information through your employees or customers
Ultimately, your business, customers and suppliers are too important. Many businesses report paying attackers ranging from thousands to millions of dollars to recover their data in from blackmail threats. The cost of recovering the data will be more expensive than the ransom demand. However, depending on the type of malware used, they still face their data being stolen and disclosed against them or being sold on the dark web regardless of paying the ransom. Sill potentially harming their customer’s personal information.

We help Australian businesses prevent, detect, contain and respond to cyber incidents. We offer many different cyber security services as well as web browser protection and monitoring through XSurfLog. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has made more individuals vulnerable to phishing attacks and disclosing their credentials by working from home. Employee clicking on Phishing email links remains as one of the top ways businesses are infiltrated.
