The New Yorker Exposé and the Question of Integrity of Sam Altman: Why Your Business Should Rethink its use of OpenAI

In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, trust is the single most important currency. The 17,000-word investigative piece by Ronan Farrow and Andrew Marantz highlights deep-seated concerns from a hundred individuals with firsthand knowledge of the organisation. The allegations, which include “omissions,” “deceptions,” and a “consistent pattern of lying,” suggest that the leadership at the helm of the world’s most prominent AI company may not meet the ethical standards required for a partner in your business’s security journey.

A Documented Pattern of Deception

The New Yorker report reveals that reservations about Altman’s leadership are not new. Internal memos and seventy pages of Slack messages, previously undisclosed, suggest that executives and board members at OpenAI had come to believe that Altman’s behaviour could have significant ramifications for the safety of the company’s products.

One memo reportedly included a list of traits, with the first item being a “consistent pattern of lying.” When confronted by the board during a previous attempt to remove him, Altman reportedly claimed he could not change his personality. For a business leader, such a statement is a major red flag. If a provider admits to a fundamental trait of deception, it becomes difficult to trust their assurances regarding data privacy, security protocols, or the long-term safety of their AI models.

Historical Red Flags Across the Industry

The concerns highlighted by the New Yorker are not limited to Altman’s tenure at OpenAI. The report traces a history of mistrust throughout his career, citing senior employees at his earlier startup, Loopt, who twice asked the board to fire him for a lack of transparency. Similarly, during his time as president of Y Combinator, co-founder Paul Graham reportedly stated that Altman was removed because he had been “lying to us all the time.”

Perhaps most concerning for government and enterprise partners is the allegation that Altman used a fabricated “sales pitch” during a meeting with United States intelligence officials. He reportedly claimed that China had launched a massive “Manhattan Project” for artificial intelligence to secure billions of dollars in government funding—a project that officials later concluded did not exist.
